Lancôme Hypnôse Star Mascara in Black – Review

Hello there!

Today I’m finally showing you the Lancôme Hypnôse Star Mascara I received as a free sample in a Sephora order I did last November! I can be a really bad procrastinator at times… bad bad Chantal! 🙂 But I finally tried it and here is how it worked out for me…

Description

This mascara dresses lashes in intense volume, unfolding a new vision of glamour inspired by Betty Boop and top model Daria Werbowy. The formula’s “black-diamond effect” imparts a glossy gel-like finish. The dual-action brush has a flat side for optimizing product deposit at the lash line while the rounded side separates, defines, and lengthens.

Scent

You probably wouldn’t expect to read about a scent in a mascara review, but this mascara has a perfumy scent that you definitely notice when you apply it, and it lingers too. I could still get whiffs of it a few hours later.

The Brush

Like the description states, this brush has a flat side. I found it was easy to work with and it did seem to help get at the root of the lashes without getting mascara all over my lid – even though I still got some a bit cause I can be clumsy. It was also easier to coat the short lashes at the inner eye area.

The Formula

This is definitely a wet mascara and it takes a few minutes to dry.

The Colour and Effect

This mascara only comes in one colour, black. Let’s see how it looks on me.

I like a mascara that is deep black and really shows when you put it on, and this one delivers on that. I did find it a bit clumpy though – especially at 2 coats. Usually I would take my tweezers to separate the lashes and remove the clumps, but for the purpose of this review I only used the brush so you could see how it applies. It does add oomph though which I like.

Wear Test

And now let’s see how it stands against time and my oily lids…

Unfortunately this is only 2 hours after I put it on. It’s not my skin’s oiliness that did that either, it just seemed to flake off a lot.

In all fairness I never wear 2 coats of mascara and I only apply it to my top lashes, so I retried this one with just one coat on the top lashes and here is how it did.

There was still some raccooning going on, but it’s definitely not as bad as when I had 2 coats on.

Removal

I used L’Oréal Sublime Soft Micellar Water to remove this mascara and it came off no problem.

Final Thoughts

This mascara gives a good oomph with only one coat, but it flakes way too much with two coats on. It did perform way better with only one coat, which is how I usually wear my mascara, but the fact that I got raccoon eyes makes this one a no-no for me.

Have you tried this mascara?
