When Do I Workout?

I’m a mom and I work full time so adding a workout into my day is easier said than done. If you follow me on Snapchat (@chantalscorner) you already know when I workout 😉 . But before I get into that I’ll give you a little history about how and when I used to workout.

Back in 2008 I moved in with my then-boyfriend now-husband. My girlfriend who lived in the unit below us (which is how I met my man) went to the gym for the 7am BodyPump class so I started going with her. We went on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. And on Tuesdays and Thursdays I would do some cardio at home (stationary bike). I did that for a little over two years. I loved working out first thing in the morning cause it was done and if some social event popped up for after work I was free to go. I used to play Ultimate Frisbee as well, 2-3 times a week. I was in good shape back then.

After we got our house and got some workout equipment in the basement I cancelled my gym membership and started working out at home, still first thing in the morning. This was around 2012. Not that I want to show you my bum again 😉 but this picture from my Workout Clothes from AliExpress post shows our functional trainer well.

At the end of 2013 I got pregnant and in early 2014 we found out I had a complication with my pregnancy (which I wrote about) so I had to stop working out. That’s when I stopped playing Ultimate too 🙁 (I miss that). Everything worked out well and I gave birth to a healthy baby girl at the end of June 2014.

While on maternity leave I was busy being a new mom. I tried to do some light workouts here and there (a few pushups and squats), but with a baby on the move who would only nap for 15 minutes I just didn’t bother.

In the fall of 2015 I finally decided to try to get into a regular workout routine again. At this point I was back to work (had been since May). My first attempt was doing 20-30 minutes on the rowing machine after my daughter was down for the night, so this was around 7:30-8:00pm. Thing is, I HATE working out in the evening close to bedtime (I went to bed at 10pm) so that didn’t last very long.

During my 2015 Christmas vacation I decided that I would start working out first thing in the morning again once I went back to work in January 2016. In order for me to have enough time to do a 45 minute cardio bike session while I watched a tv show (I love catching up on TV shows while on the bike) and get it done before my daughter woke up, I had to wake up at 5:20am. Back then she used to wake up around 6:15am so that was perfect for me cause I could grab her before I got into the shower (she would play in the washroom while I showered).

That worked well and I did it for a little over two months, five days a week. Thing is, I was becoming a very unhappy person. By the time we would put our daughter to bed, do my own pre-bed routine, then go down to clean the kitchen and all, I barely had 15 minutes left to myself before I had to go to bed around 9:15pm. All work and no play makes mommy a very grumpy person. And on top of that my daughter started waking up earlier and earlier and I always had to cut my workouts short. So around mid March 2016 I stopped.

In May 2016 it hit me one day: we have showers at the office! I was thinking I could do some type of HIIT workout outside during lunch then go in and take a shower. When I was sharing that idea with a colleague he told me that we actually have a gym facility in the basement. SAY WHAT?!? So I informed myself and sure enough, we have a gym!

The gym membership is $25 a month, how awesome is that?!? They have various classes during lunch (one per day, but different each day), and have enough equipment and weights to do full body workouts and cardio sessions.

So in June I started at the gym. For the rest of 2016 my attendance was patchy at best. I would sometimes go once or twice a week then not go for one or two weeks. I found all the excuses in the world not to go: tired, hungry, just didn’t feel like it.

I’m happy to say that my attendance has improved in 2017! I usually do 4-5 workouts per week now, yay! I used to go during my lunch, but since mid November the showers have been under renovation so now I work while I eat my lunch and go to the gym around 3pm. Plus, at that time I’m usually the only person there so I have the whole place to myself! (as you can see from the pictures above)

With a kid it’s not always easy to find what works for you, as you can see from my experience. 🙂 I’m so happy that I have found a time and place that works for me!

Do you have kids? Do you workout?

  • That’s wonderful! I’m so glad you’re getting into a routine with it! I always love seeing your snaps when you’re at the gym – good on you!

    • Thank you Chelle! ❤️️
I always wonder if people are tired of seeing my gym snaps, lol! I don’t snap every single time, but it helps keep me accountable. ☺️️

I so admire you! My gym attendance is also patchy but I don’t have any kids yet! Lol, what are my excuses? Lame-o! PS. So excited for your goal of being in the best shape ever for your birthday this year! Be sure to update us on your progress when the time comes, that’ll be so exciting!! <3

The work out struggle is real!! Totally relate. Trying to find working out time that is consistent with a toddler and working full time is soo hard. For a minute there was gym literally down the block from my work that I could go on lunch, but has since closed. Reading this post, just reminded me that I really need to look for another gym and make it work.

    • It’s too bad that the gym down the block from your work closed. It’s hard finding something easy to incorporate into our day without really adding time onto it. I hope you can find something else that is close!

  • I haven’t set foot in a gym for over a year now as I know I don’t get there often enough to warrant a membership- living in London they’re all pretty expensive! I’ve recently started doing HIIT workouts at home when I get up/before I go to bed and I’m hoping I can keep it up! If you can find time I should be able to!

    • I love doing HIIT workouts! Once the showers are fixed at work I’ll probably start doing some again. They make me sweat so they’re a no-go without a shower. 🙂

Great ideas! It can be so difficult to find time to workout with kids

  • Hey that is so wonderful!

  • Adrienne Brown

Boy, this sounds so much like my experience with trying to carve out time for me while I was raising my boys. I am still having to adjust every once and awhile, because now I am doing foster care. But you got to do what you got do! Thanks for this nice post.

    • It’s quite a learning curve when they’re young cause once you feel like you’ve got a rhythm, they go and change on you and you have to figure it all out again, lol! I’m glad I finally found something that works. Happy that you can too! Thank you for stopping by! 🙂

  • 4-5 workouts a week is amazing! You go girl!! Super inspirational ♥♥

    • Thank you Rebekah! ♥
And this week I only did 3 workouts, oops! I was supposed to have four, but forgot my gym bag at home on Monday so I couldn’t do nothing that day. Oh well, shit happens! 🙂

  • I LOVE THIS. I wish I do go at lunch when I can and otherwise after work but this is just so convinent and fits so well into your routine, that’s awesome you found such a great situation! 🙂
