Pregnancy Diaries: Belly Creams

Hi all!

I was asked by Jenn from A Beautiful Zen if I had a post of products that have helped me through my pregnancy and I can’t believe that I had not thought of doing that! Thank you Jenn!

The only pregnancy products I’ve really been using are belly oils/lotions/creams. Keep on reading to find out which ones I prefer.

First, let’s talk about stretch marks cause really these products are all supposed to help prevent them. If you read any medical documents they all say that no topical treatment can help prevent stretch marks. They happen because your body grows faster than your skin can keep up with. Read more on stretch marks on WebMD.

However, because of this stretching going on, your belly can become itchy so using creams can help with that. Not to mention that they keep your skin hydrated and smooth.

I use my products on my belly, boobs, butt, thighs and lower back – all the places that could possibly stretch more (and itch) during my pregnancy. The rest of my body gets my regular Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion.

Alright, enough blabbing and onto the products…

L’Occitane – Supple Skin Oil

The first product I used was L’Occitane “Supple Skin Oil” that I received in my Fall 2013 Loose Button Luxe Box. That was at the beginning of my pregnancy and I didn’t need anything yet, but it gave me the chance to try it out anyway. I really liked the smell – it was like a fresh sweet almond smell, but since it was an oil it kind of sat on top of my skin and I didn’t find that I really absorbed much. I felt like my clothes would end up absorbing more than my skin did, and that was after having it on for a good 30 minutes before getting dressed (while I did my hair).

The second product I tried was Bio-Oil. This product is raved about by so many women so obviously I just had to try it out. I first purchased a small bottle and when I finished that one I bought the big bottle. It smells nice. However, like the L’Occitane “Supple Skin Oil” I found that my clothes absorbed more than my skin did. By the time I reapplied at night my skin almost felt dry. Why did I buy the big bottle? I have no idea because shortly after starting it I decided that I wanted to use something different.

Know anyone who wants the rest of this one? 🙂

Vaseline – Cocoa Radiant Body Butter

After my dissatisfaction with Bio-Oil I did some research online and lots of people were touting cocoa butter as their holy grail so off to Shoppers Drug Mart I went and bought the Vaseline “Cocoa Radiant Body Butter”. Wow this product smelled DELICIOUS! Being a body butter it was also really thick and I could feel that it was really hydrating my belly. The first time I used it, when I showered the next day (24h later) my torso still felt slippery like I had just applied lotion. Now that is a sign that a product lasts! I really liked this one.

Dans un Jardin – Optimal-care stretch mark cream

I received this product for Christmas so once I was done with my Vaseline “Cocoa Radiant Body Butter” I switched to this one. I did a full review on this product already so I’ll keep this short: I loved it! It smells like baby lotion and it hydrates really well. But it’s a bit pricy so I did not repurchase.

Palmer’s – Cocoa Butter Formula Massage Cream for Stretch Marks

That all brings us to now and the product I’m currently using is Palmer’s “Cocoa Butter Formula Massage Cream for Stretch Marks”. OMG this smells delicious, I just want to use it as icing!!! It’s also really thick and hydrating, I love it! And, like the Vaseline “Cocoa Radiant Body Butter” it lasts and my skin still feels slippery when I shower 24 hours later.

*** Favourite Product ***

After having tried 5 different products I have a winner! Actually I have 2 winners: Vaseline “Cocoa Radiant Body Butter” and Palmer’s “Cocoa Butter Formula Massage Cream for Stretch Marks”. They both smell DELICIOUS and they’re both thick butters that hydrate super well for a long time.

However, the winner for now is Palmer’s “Cocoa Butter Formula Massage Cream for Stretch Marks” because it is made for pregnancy so it has a few extra ingredients that are supposed to help more. I’m not sure I believe in all those stretch mark preventing claims, but it can’t hurt to use it, right?

That being said, if you’re not pregnant and you’re looking for a rich body butter then I highly recommend Vaseline “Cocoa Radiant Body Butter”. Just smell it next time you pass by it – it smells that good!

To all the mamas reading this, what was your go-to belly product?

– Chantal 🙂
