Born Pretty Holographic Nail Polish in Violet Light – Swatches and Review

As much as I love nail polish, oddly enough, I’ve barely tried any holographic nail polishes. I don’t know why because they’re just so pretty. I’m happy to say that today I have one to share with you! This one is from Born Pretty and it’s called Violet Light ($9.99 USD).

The brush on this bottle is wide and thin, just like I love them.

Violet Light is a dark purple holo polish. The formula was very interesting to work with and honestly less than desirable. I usually do my nails with three strokes (like in this image) and when I did the centre stroke, it would completely remove the nail polish where the brush overlapped on the side strokes. Anywhere that the brush would overlap an existing painted area, it would remove the polish from that area. So that was a pain to work with. I found that the best way to paint my nails was to go really thick with my layers and only do two fast strokes (which was possible thanks to the wide brush). It wasn’t perfect, but that seemed to work the best.

The first time I tried this nail polish I applied a topcoat and that kind of dulled the holo effect. It also created a weird effect in the middle of the nails (see picture below).

Within twelve hours of having my nails done, half of my nails had chips at the tips. That was with a base coat, three coats of polish, AND topcoat. I was not impressed.

I reapplied the nail polish to take new pictures, this time without topcoat, so you can better see the holo effect. This is with three coats of nail polish and no topcoat.

I have to talk about the smell. Being a nail polish lover, I actually love the smell of nail polish. It’s therapeutic for me; opening a bottle relaxes me. Anyone else? However, this nail polish has a very strong scent that even I had a hard time to stand.

Other than the beautiful colour and holo effect, I don’t have many good things to say about this nail polish, unfortunately. I’ll probably try to use it for stamping at some point because a holo polish can create a beautiful stamp effect. But other than that, I will not wear this one by itself again.
